Il luogoThe place
A Capo d'Armi lo Ionio smette di essere golfo e diventa Stretto. Le correnti si invertono ogni sei ore, l'acqua fredda risale dal fondo e porta in superficie il nutrimento che rende questo tratto di mare uno dei più vivi del Mediterraneo.
At Capo d'Armi the Ionian stops being a gulf and becomes a strait. The currents reverse every six hours, cold water rises from the deep and carries nutrients to the surface — which is why this stretch of sea is one of the most alive in the Mediterranean.
I Greci chiamarono questo promontorio Leucopetra, «pietra bianca»: centocinquanta metri di roccia a picco, un faro acceso dal 1897 e, di fronte, sospeso sopra la foschia, l'Etna. Da qualche parte qui intorno restano ancora i mosaici della villa romana di Publio Valerio.
The Greeks called this headland Leucopetra, "white stone": one hundred and fifty metres of sheer rock, a lighthouse lit since 1897 and, across the water, floating above the haze, Mount Etna. Somewhere close by still lie the mosaics of Publius Valerius' Roman villa.

An agile hull built to move. This is the one for coastal runs, fishing trips and dive support: quick to the spot, close in to the rock where bigger boats can't go, and back ashore before the wind turns.

Sott'acquaBelow the surface
Lo Stretto è un collo di bottiglia: delfini, capodogli e balenottere lo attraversano per raggiungere le Eolie. Le correnti sollevano dal fondo acqua fredda e ricca, e con essa creature che altrove vivono solo in profondità. Per questo qui i pescatori hanno inventato mestieri che non esistono da nessun'altra parte. The Strait is a bottleneck: dolphins, sperm whales and fin whales pass through on their way to the Aeolian Islands. The currents lift cold, rich water from the bottom — and with it creatures that elsewhere live only in the deep. It is why fishermen here invented trades that exist nowhere else.

La scogliera sottocosta arriva a 8–18 metri, poi un intervallo di sabbia scende ripido e la roccia riprende dai 37–40 metri, proseguendo a scaloni fino a 70–80. Le pareti sono coperte di spugne, tunicati, briozoi ed echinodermi, con fenditure orizzontali dove si infilano corvine e gamberi rossi.
The inshore reef runs to 8–18 metres, then a sand break drops steeply and the rock resumes at 37–40 metres, stepping down to 70–80. The walls are carpeted in sponges, tunicates, bryozoans and echinoderms, with horizontal fissures where corb and red shrimp tuck in.
Dentici, saraghi fasciati, scorfani rossi, gronchi e murene sono di casa. Un avvertimento onesto, però: le correnti dello Stretto sono serie e la profondità è vera. Noi facciamo appoggio logistico e conosciamo punti e orari giusti — le immersioni profonde restano cosa da brevettati esperti, con il proprio istruttore o diving.
Dentex, white seabream, red scorpionfish, congers and morays are all at home. An honest warning, though: the Strait's currents are serious and the depth is real. We provide logistics and know the spots and the right windows — deep dives remain the business of experienced certified divers, with their own instructor or dive centre.

Cinquanta chilometri di costa ionica e, sopra, le fiumare che salgono verso l'Aspromonte. Qui si è continuato a parlare greco per duemilacinquecento anni. «Cinque dita»: il borgo è incastrato sotto una rupe che ha davvero la forma di una mano. Abbandonato, poi riabitato da artigiani e festival. Al tramonto la roccia diventa rossa.
"Five fingers": the village is wedged beneath a crag genuinely shaped like a hand. Abandoned, then re-inhabited by artisans and festivals. At sunset the rock turns red.

Un miraggio che si vede solo da questa sponda e solo al mattino: la Sicilia si solleva sull'acqua, con case e campanili sospesi a mezz'aria. I Normanni la attribuirono alla fata Morgana; la fisica la chiama rifrazione. Sul posto, vince sempre la prima spiegazione.
A mirage visible only from this shore and only in the morning: Sicily lifts off the water, houses and bell towers hanging in mid-air. The Normans blamed Morgan le Fay; physics calls it refraction. Standing there, the first explanation always wins.

No, nessuna. A bordo c'è sempre chi conduce e chi assiste. Se è la prima volta che salite su una barca ditecelo: partiamo con calma e scegliamo una giornata tranquilla.

Costume, telo, crema solare, cappello, occhiali e scarpe con la suola chiara. Una felpa leggera per il ritorno, anche d'estate. Il resto — acqua, ghiaccio, maschere, giubbotti, attrezzatura da pesca — è a bordo.
Swimsuit, towel, sunscreen, hat, sunglasses and light-soled shoes. A light sweater for the way back, even in summer. The rest — water, ice, masks, life jackets, fishing tackle — is on board.

Si decide la mattina stessa, guardando l'acqua e non solo le app. Se non ci sono le condizioni si sposta a un altro giorno oppure si rimborsa l'acconto per intero. Non usciamo mai «tanto per uscire».
We decide on the morning itself, looking at the water and not only at apps. If conditions aren't right we move the date or refund the deposit in full. We never go out just for the sake of going out.
Per lo snorkeling assolutamente sì, ed è già moltissimo. Per le immersioni con bombole servono brevetto e accompagnamento di un istruttore o di un diving: noi forniamo barca appoggio, logistica e conoscenza dei punti, e lavoriamo volentieri con i centri della zona.
For snorkelling absolutely, and it's already a lot. Scuba diving requires certification and an instructor or dive centre: we provide the support boat, the logistics and the local knowledge of the sites, and we work happily alongside the centres in the area.
Da maggio a ottobre per il mare caldo e le giornate lunghe; giugno e settembre sono i mesi più belli, con meno gente e acqua più limpida. Sott'acqua, paradossalmente, è l'inverno a regalare la visibilità migliore. Su richiesta usciamo tutto l'anno.

Siamo a una ventina di minuti dall'aeroporto di Reggio Calabria e dal centro città, sulla SS106 ionica. C'è la stazione ferroviaria di Lazzaro e parcheggio vicino all'imbarco. Da Messina: traghetto più venti minuti di auto.
About twenty minutes from Reggio Calabria airport and the city centre, on the SS106 coast road. Lazzaro has its own railway station and there is parking near the boarding point. From Messina: ferry plus a twenty-minute drive.
